Think someone explained on here that they basically wanted to save face at the last minute so asked for a fee.

It was me, I found the article..

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53403060

Quote:
Although Real Madrid wanted a fee for the player, Bale's people persuaded them that it was in the interest of everyone to let him go for free.

Everything was in place for a move, but suddenly news of a supposed offer of around €40m (£36m) for James Rodriguez came to the club's notice. How could selling Rodriguez for that sort of money, while simultaneously giving away Gareth Bale, be justified they thought?

Real Madrid immediately demanded a fee for the player and that was the end of that. From that moment on the Chinese club would not even accept any calls from any of the parties involved in the negotiation.

To add insult to injury the alleged offer for Rodriguez was later found to be fake. Rodriguez, another player who Zidane seems to have struggled with, is still at Real Madrid.

because you win loads of things and earn loads of money, play in a 100,000 seater stadium, live in one of the world's great cities and get to tell everyone you played for the biggest club in the world.

Don't believe a word Zidane says. If he refused to play they would be fining him the first opportunity they have.

What actually started the rift? It’s been so long I can’t remember, if indeed I ever knew.

Think Bale was a Perez vanity buy. All seemed to go a bit pear shaped after the 3rd (2nd?) CL win when the president wanted to move on from Ronaldo and focus the attack around Bale. Became a saga...

Imagine having a player who scored the crucial extra-time winning goal to seal a 10th European Cup, and then a few years later score arguably the greatest ever goal in a Champions League final, to seal another European Cup, and still being this hated by the club.

Madrid are an absolute classless circus of a club. Detest them.

Gets injured a lot but he's out of this world as a player.

I do wonder if his injuries are slight strains most of the time. It does look like he picks and chooses his games.

It’s a madness that inflicts more people in power than you’d think; I think deep down they resent not getting enough recognition for themselves so they have to insert themselves to gain relevance. It was the central theme of The Last Dance.
