I’ve almost completely given up on this. Everton being in the mix is excellent because they will have to go some to prosecute one and not the other.

over what period?!

according to transfermarkt this is their 'net spend' the last 7 years:

24/25 -126.60m
23/24 +7.17m
22/23 -45.1
21/22 -109.4
20/21 -98.82
19/20 -20.99
18/19 -226.15


Net loss of £619m over that period. And they're just the official figures
