Which begs the question:

"Why wasn't he on the bench Saturday?"

Because he didn't fancy sitting there for 24 hours.

Yeah did seem strange. To be honest in my opinion Fergie tried to get away with one against Reading and failed. I'd also say that our pre-season was not set up correctly.

Strange to spend £60 million over a summer and yet start the season with a left back on the left wing and a fat left back up front innit.

Should have had it later in the year.

No but you shouldn't come out of pre-season totally undercooked and with a fat left back up front.

The most disappointing aspect of Sunday, for me, was that we were genuinely complacent and were in cruise control for much of the first half.

As you say, Fergie tried to pull one. He thought that no back up on the bench wouldn't be a problem because they wouldn't be needed. Well, firstly, you can't account for injuries and, secondly, how disrespectful to Reading.

Considering Reading had injuries and lost players to cope with and that they were playing the Champions away on the first day, fergie should've expected a fairly negative display from them. As such his bench selection makes almost no sense at all.

These are the same problems, mistakes & complacency, that were so present during the three seasons before last.

Maybe so, still not gonna read a doom filled season into it after one match.

I think he simply thought we would coast it reasonably comfortably.

Are now assuming second season syndrome and allowing it to creep into our team selection.

Sunday was poor. We need to forget about quickly though. It wasn't a disaster and back to back wins now will put it right out of our minds. But we're already being asked questions at this early stage.

We need to respond positively and react like Champions.

I think we will.

what a load of %@#$&!s. the team put out was based on all sorts of information which none of us have - fitness levels, illnesses, form in training and so on. that team was more than good enough and had more than enough chances to win the game. it could easily have been 3 or 4 - nil. get a grip ffs.

Yes, it was good enough to win. But there was no back up plan for if it didn't (or if we got an injury).

I think the line up, but more importantly, our attitude and approach was wrong and a little presumptuous.

However, it's not the end of the world and hopefully it will spark a positive response.

That was one of our best qualities last year.
