In fairness clubs could easily defend themselves against it by specifying in the release clause that it had to be during the transfer window.

It's the law in Spain that all players have to have a release clause. But I think it's the player themselves who have to pay it to buy themselves out of their own contract. The higher the club wants the release clause to be, the more wages the player will demand. So the smaller clubs can rarely afford to insist on £300m release clauses otherwise the player will demand wages to match the club's valuation of him.

The odd thing with release clauses in England is they seem to be really sketchy in how they work. Remember when Arsenal triggered Suarez's clause at Liverpool? They bid £40m + £1. Suarez did have a release clause and it was £40m. But Liverpool just refused to sell him. I guess Suarez himself could have gone legal, but if he was in Spain he'd have been able to leave without any say so from Liverpool.

A far bigger disgrace than release clauses, imv, is the loan market nowadays. From what it was originally intended for to what it is now. Basically allows the richer clubs to act like a temping agency. Buy up loads of young talent, rent them out year after year, get your money back (and then some) and wait and see if the player is any good or just sell them without them ever kicking a ball for you. No doubt FFP has lead to this. With players now getting two year loan deals with option/obligation to buy and all that nonsense.

Bring back Ceefax.
Get rid of VAR.
Bring back those really thin goalkeeper gloves with bits of rubber on them.
Officially use jumpers for goalposts, etc.
