When I think of GOOD penalty takers like Le Tissier, Cantona, Shearer, Lampard - they are/were very confident, and rarely missed. I'd add Balotelli to that list as well perhaps.

Two matches of 2014 come to mind - United v Sunderland, and this Munchen v Arsenal match. Extremely poor penalties.

The players nowadays look shell-shocked when they have to take a pen. It's embarrassing really.
Lampard has missed 11 of 78(!!) penalties he's taken, that's a shit ratio imo & he doesn't tuck them in the corner etc, the lad smashes them or picks a side.

Balotelli is excellent as he has a technique, he waits for the keeper to move (or not) & slots it... saw him miss one the other day & it's the only one he's failed to convert (26 scored of 27 - superb record).

Eric scored 14 of 16, not too shabby.

Shearer scored 54 of 60 (still pissing myself at Lampard having 78 £#%&!ing pens!)

Le Tiss buried 48 of 49, the don.

My favourite penalty taker was Signori, one step & bang. Bottom corner, goal.

Rickie Lambert has a great record but his technique is pretty simple, just smash it.

A striker's job is to score goals. When they pass up the chance to take a penalty I do wonder if they really appreciate their own profession, and I also have to question their mental strength.

Imagine the likes of Van Nistelrooy, Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, Romario etc. refusing to take penalties, ffs. The only acceptable exception is when a team possesses one of those rare penalty specialists (Le Tissier, Irwin, Hierro, Chilavert).
I don't think that's fair. Some strikers just aren't good dead ball kickers, Hughes and Cole spring to mind.

A professional footballer paid untold riches incapable of burying it from 12 years ffs.

Non-penalty taking strikers are @#%&!s. More so those with a shit record.

That was actually his second miss. He missed against Napoli, then Genoa.

He's missed 11 in the PL alone according to Opta (in the post just before yours)
