Rio Ferdinand returns as England captain at Wembley

EURO 2012 QUALIFIER, GROUP G - ENGLAND v MONTENEGRO
Venue: Wembley Stadium Date: Tuesday 12 October Kick-off: 2000 BST
Coverage: Live on ITV1, commentary on BBC Radio 5 live and BBC Sport website
Rio Ferdinand
Ferdinand - a first competitive England appearance for 12 months

Rio Ferdinand has been confirmed as England's captain for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro at Wembley.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has worn the armband in the Manchester United defender's long absence through various injury problems.

Meanwhile, Sunderland striker Darren Bent has been ruled out with a groin injury picked up in Monday training, and Peter Crouch is likely to start.

Terry pulled out of Tuesday's match on Sunday evening with a back injury.

With Phil Jagielka (hamstring) also missing, Ferdinand is expected to be joined in central defence by Joleon Lescott.

Ferdinand, 31, has only worn the armband for two of the 10 internationals played because of various injury problems.

He missed the World Cup campaign with knee ligament damage sustained during England's first training session in South Africa.

Midfielder Gerrard has worn the armband in Ferdinand's absence and earned praise from Capello for the way he has handled the role.

But the Italian has reverted to his original appointment with Ferdinand leading out the side for the first time since the friendly international with Japan in Graz in late May.

Ferdinand's last competitive appearance for his country was in the World Cup qualifier with Belarus at Wembley 12 months ago.

Bent is the fourth player to withdraw from the game with injury after Terry, Jagielka and Aaron Lennon (back) were also forced out.

Aston Villa's Stewart Downing and Gary Cahill of Bolton have been drafted into the squad as replacements.

60 minutes until his back goes and he's out for a month. On the plus side if he's out for a month after an england game the FA will have to pay his wages meaning we'll save half a million pound.
Half a million pound a month!!!

Is that true? Never heard of that before.

Can we not claim that Hargreaves got injured playing for England? We'd probably get about £10m back.

Not like Fergie's averse to pulling a player out of a squad.
