Default Italia 90: When football changed forever

C4, 9pm tomorrow (Monday)

Great year, great music and I was just 16 years old having left school.

Anyway, best World Cup for me… worth a watch if you’re interested.

I think it was the peak of international football.

1978 is my favourite World Cup, first one I remember and the ticker tape, theme tunes and great players are etched on my brain forever. Even the stadium names. 1982 was brilliant because Northern Ireland were in it and did really well. 86 was meh, and 1990 was superb. Great time to be alive in general. But it’ all went a bit downhill after that.

Thankfully, United won a few cups in the decades that followed. Which was nice.

The raw emotion at this one was crazy. The players felt like mega stars.

I was 7 and can vividly remember watching about 20 of the matches, I was obsessed with this tournament for years after. Hearing the BBC theme and then Nessum Dorma hits me right in the stomach every time.

Lots of nostalgia, some drama, but objectively it was an awful tournament.

Lowest goals per game of any World Cup. The worst final ever. Penalty shoot outs all over the shop. Ireland got to the quarters without winning a game. Schillaci was the top scorer ffs - scored 6 goals. He scored 7 goals in his entire international career.

Poor, poor World Cup.

Amazing to look back and see how many empty seats there were at the semi final. On one of the angles after lineker scored the equaliser, you couldn’t see a single fan behind him

This, it was well staged but the football was crap.

86 was mad fun, what the £#%&!? Was also the first one I saw much of, 82 I was a bit young and the time difference wasn't conducive. Italy 90 was great culturally but a lot of the actual matches were pretty gruelling fare. Will definitely watch this programme though.

The worst world cup is the one coming up, obviously.

It was such a shite WC that the authorities changed the backpass rule after it

One of the few genuine high spots was the Cameroon team, and they have never got to that level since.

This... the vibe was £#%&!ing top, and created some cult heroes (milla, schillaci), but the quality of the football was shit on a stick

but it really did kick off the best decade of football, literally and figuratively

I remember listening to England v Cameroon on a coach back from Uni to Manchester and going over the Snake Pass and the connection being terrible.

Great tournament and cemented my love of all things German.
