Not a great performance or too much good football but to be expected in our first pre-season match and on a pitch as bad as that

Schweinsteiger was absolute quality and Schneiderlin was really good first half
Pereira looked excellent as well

The big thing to take from the match though is a shift in formation from 433 to 4231
I expect that's the formation we will go into the season with as we only have 4 pre-season matches and LvG will want to get the players fully integrated into this new system
4231 will suit our attacking players much more especially Di Maria if he stays

Smalling is simply not good enough to be our centre back. For where we want to be and the quality we are looking to recruit, he sticks out like a sore thumb. Still more Maidstone than Man Utd.

It's not
You're playing with two holding midfielders instead of 1 if you switch from 433 to 4231
That gives the 3 behind the front player more freedom to move around and pick up pockets of space rather than having to rigidly stick to a position like last season

It's not a big change like 352 to 433 is but it's significant especially for our creative attacking players. If Di Maria stays it could help bring out the best in him

You swap a primarily holding midfielder for a primarily attacking one.

That's all that needs changing.

The 2 don't have to be 'holding' either.

It was pretty much 4-4-2 in the first half:

Keeper
Darmian Jones Blind Shaw
Mata Carrick Schneiderlin Young
Rooney Depay

Depay dropped off now and again but he didn't move around that much.

Yeah but then again BBC said signing Schweinsteiger is a 'risk', whereas Sterling is a bargain at £49m. I take anything they say with a pinch of abu salt

Typically dull pre season match, still have to double take at Schweinsteiger in a Utd shirt. Could do with one of the attacking youngsters really kicking on this season, one of Perriera, Wilson or Januzaj giving another option to change the game. It is an area where Utd are still a little bare.
