When I was a kid it was all about Best, Busby and in a different way, Shankly: who I only knew as an inflatable totem tossed around the Stretford End to counter all the Munich chants. Truth is that to my generation, none of these figures were quite real. They were all relics, connected to battles fought a literal lifetime ago.
Then this fella showed up. As amazing as '68 must have been, we should think ourselves incredibly fortunate to have experienced the '99 season. Maybe future generations will take the treble for granted, as we do putting a man on the moon, because history shows that it is at least doable. But it didn't seem like that at the time. Fergie made it doable. You can deride sport as a bread and circuses distraction, but for me '99 was the major cultural landmark of a United fan's lifetime. But I'd have revered him if he'd have 'only' managed this: Robbo lifting a league trophy 38 pots. |
