I seem to remember them trying to widen the goals as well.

I don't think america deserves the world cup tbh, 80% of them would have no idea it's happening anyway and they wouldn't appreciate what they've got.

I'd like to see it go to the US just so that they can have Diana Ross taking penalties

did they really try and widen the goals?

The U.S wanted to change from throw ins to kick ins. Football should be kept very far away from those morons.

they host one world cup and want to change all the rules.

i remember our friendly a few years ago where we had to take penalties so that one team 'won'

Yep. They've always had this notion that they have to change the game to make it more palatable to the mainstream american audience.

I'm fine with the fact it remains a minority sport over there played by girls and schoolkids. Because the minute they take a serious, serious interest in it - it's over. They'll £#%&!ing ruin it.

I went to this game during the 1994 World Cup

And on the basis of how to organise a sporting event, I'd let the Americans run it every time.

Agreed. A good tournament, but not remembered fondly here because of the final and lack of English participation.

Argentina vs Romania is one of the best games of football I've seen.

2018, I think it’s certain England will get it. Spain, Italy, France and Germany have all had a World Cup in the last 25 years. With it being Europe’s turn again in 2018, I think they’ll be no other choice really.

As I say above, don't underestimate the Russkies.

The new St Petersburg stadium is superb, and the new national stadium in Moscow. A few other new grounds being built; they'd need a lot more, but they'd get them built in time if Comrade Putin says so. A lot of cities capable of sustaining large enough stadiums.

I really hope Russia doesn't get it. My own experience of the place didn't leave the impression of a country that would be particularly inviting or hospital to thousands of fans from across the globe.

I didn't see a single £#%&!er who looked happy (except for pissed Reds ).

Um, no. Didn't try to widen the goals either, but don't let that stop you.

You get occasional idiot sportswriters suggesting these things, not anybody in any official capacity.
