Picked up after school by my dad and it was the first thing on the radio. All the talk had been about Collymore so when the story began with a massive day for Manchester United that was what I expected. Giddy euphoria.
Loved Andy Cole, came as an out and out poacher, transformed into one of the first of the modern day all round CF's, an influential player in some ways in how the fashions moved away from one dimensional goalscorers. Cole could play with any partner(bar Eric) had great movement and was extremely unselfish. He also had a very satisfying narrative arc to his Utd career, started slowly, takes a lot of the blame for that title loss to Blackburn, then injuries, becoming a figure of fun for the ABU population, the press constantly linking players he would be replaced by, then the comeback, when he proved all his doubters wrong |
