Question Anfield

Why is it so much more intimidating than other stadiums like Old Trafford?

More chance of getting your wallet/car stolen than any other ground in England.

Truth hurts

Time and time again good teams have gone there, struggled to cope with the environment and collapsed. You can probably count on one hand the number of great United performances there in the last 30 years as an example.

Fat Goth is a massive @#%&! but he isn't wrong

OT European night's are a bit of a myth these days
When's the last truly great one...Barca 08?

I didn't watch a minute of tonight's match but I can well imagine what the atmosphere was like and it will have intimidated Barca unlike what they experienced at OT in the previous round
Part of that is how Liverpool play brings the best out of the crowd while we play like timid little sheep

However we have to accept the truth that OT European night's are now a pale imitation of what I grew up with in the 90s

The only one I remember is under King Louis. Although we managed a few famous smash and grabs, we never played well there under Ferguson, not once.

Thanks

If our team wasn't so shit, our European nights would be like they used to be. It's as simple as that. When you don't score a goal at home in something like 6 european games, don't expect any fan to come into the ground expectant of seeing anything good happen. And then no one has a shot in 90 minutes so who's creating an atmosphere in that situation?

Thanks

Self fulfilling prophecy. They believe that simply because they’re at Anfield they can do it. Mentality is a strange thing.

It’s the difference between being buoyed by your history and being intimidated by it.

Aye, and more to the point: when the media tells you to do it, or tells the nation that you will do it at every turn... you do it.

Same as yawn. Every club in the £#%&!ing country sang it but without fail, when the match was at theirs, the tv systematically focussed on them, every £#%&!ing week, telling them it was their song. Until it was.

Now it’s the European tie under floodlights.

They obviously haven’t noticed diving in England’s biggest dive.

Their supporters always believe they can do it and it transmits onto the pitch.

We on the other hand are one doomy fan base comparatively

It’s been said by others by I also envy how ballsy they are and how little they respect supposed superior opposition.

It's all new and exciting though. A few years of being ground down by experience and they'll be back to being done with it and seething and fuming. Like us.

We went through a spell, admittedly 90s when they didn’t beat us home or away for 5 years or more.

The crowd hysteria has escalated in recent years, despite no trophies in recent memory, due to the hordes of ex-players in the media who cue them up for it and magnify every injustice. What other explanation? The @#%&!s have genuinely done well recently (still no £#%&!ing silverware) but Klopp has improved them tbf but they’ve had the tv, papers etc begging them to win the title.... and here we are.

This... and in the early 90s when it was all falling apart for them you could hear a pin drop, whilst they looked at us. Full circle, they’re getting it together and getting on the bandwagon.

And I £#%&!ing hate that, that its them of all clubs.
Their supporters have had that mindset Since Istanbul.

Even at our most dominant domestically we rarely swept top European opposition away like they did last night in the knock-outs.

Roma and Inter in the 2000's come to mind but would they count as "top" opposition?

And far too often, even with our best teams, we've seen our players bottle it on the big European occasions.

The fact that they've been largely **** in the last 30 years but will have been to the same number of CL finals as us is incredible

Roma themselves did it to Barsa last year

And of course Barca did it to PSG recently.

Is it me, or does home advantage seem to count for more in Europe these days? Except when we are playing obviously

That’s because European football was far more competitive when we were at our best. All these supposed “top sides” throwing away 3 and 4 goal advantages on the regular now in the champions league. That’s nuts. It wouldn’t have happened in the late 90s.

Agreed but we still seemed to bottle it some years

Italian sides back then...you went a goal down and more often than not you were £#%&!ed. With a few very memorable exceptions.
