Smalling is an idiot, clearly. It appears that people are letting him off, though, since the costume was intended as a Jäger-bomber, not a suicide bomber. The problem is that the bomber costume is still racially loaded, or prejudice laden, given that he's chosen the clothing traditionally associated with Arab Muslims; whether he realises it or not, he's pragmatically implying that he thinks all suicide attackers are Muslim. I wouldn't sack him, I'd make him spend his weeknights preparing for an end of season test on the history of Kamikaze attacks in WWII.

there are certain subjects in our society that normal people would think were no go areas.
automatically alarm bells would ring. this shows smalling isn't normal.
