Fantasy - weak plays week 1
Lads, I will start to put the Strong / Weak play info up each week as I did last year. As the first game of the season comes early it is not out yet so heres a taster of the weak fantasy plays this week.
Hopefully I'll have the S v W play info up by Sat morning. Scheduling, in part, is a determining factor in fantasy success. Throughout the season we will examine NFL schedules to determine the best matchups for your fantasy players. We won’t bore you with analysis every week on No. 1 starters such as Brady, Manning, Tomlinson, Peterson, Moss etc., but rather we’ll focus on the challenging weekly questions involving less clear cut decisions. These decisions, made correctly, can elevate your chances of winning each week. Here’s this week’s weak plays. [SIZE="4"]Chris Perry vs. RavensPerry has ascended up fantasy drafts boards as much as any player in recent weeks. With the release of Rudi Johnson, Perry, at least for now, is the No. 1 running back for the Bengals. However, Perry has a difficult matchup in his Week 1 showdown with the Ravens. While the Ravens are no longer the great all-around defense they were four or five years ago, they still are strong against the run. The Bengals gained just 115 rushing yards in two matchups against the Ravens last season. Furthermore, the Ravens ranked in the top 10 in fewest rushing touchdowns allowed (7th), fewest yards allowed (2nd) and were the top-ranked unit in fewest yards allowed per rush. Perry might be a running back who can help a fantasy roster, but it probably won’t be in Week 1. [SIZE="4"]Lee Evans vs. Seahawks After a phenomenal 2006 season, Evans regressed in 2007, catching just 55 passes for 849 yards and five touchdowns. This season, Evans is seen as a low No. 2 or high No. 3 fantasy receiver with Trent Edwards at quarterback. However, the road to redemption may start out with a speed bump for Evans, as he is matched up against a stout Seahawks defense. The Seahawks ranked first in the league in fewest touchdown passes allowed and ninth in yards passing. While Evans is expected to have a better 2008, it probably won’t be in Week 1. [SIZE="4"]Fred Taylor vs. Titans Taylor continued to defied age and the odds in 2007 and rushed for more than 1,200 yards on 5.4 yards per carry. Despite his recent arrest, Taylor is expected to play this week against the one team that held him in check in 2007, the Titans. Taylor gained just 61 yards in two games vs. Tennessee, and run-stopper Albert Haynesworth is ready to make life miserable once again for Taylor. The Titans were 12th in the league in rushing touchdowns allowed; fifth in yards allowed and 13th in yards per carry allowed but were ranked in the top 10 in all three categories with Haynesworth in the lineup. While Taylor may continue to defy his nickname of “Fragile Freddy,” Week 1 might be more frightening than anything else. [SIZE="4"]Matt Schaub vs. Steelers Schaub is considered one of the better upside quarterbacks in this year’s fantasy class. He is equipped with a star wideout in Andre Johnson, a solid No.2 receiver in Kevin Walter and an emerging tight end in Owen Daniels. If he can stay healthy, Schaub has all the makings of a solid fantasy quarterback. However, Week 1 provides a tough challenge against the Steelers. While the Steelers were 15th in passing touchdowns allowed, they were third in total passing yards allowed and led the league in fewest yards per attempt allowed. Schaub should have many solid Sunday’s, but this might not be one of them. [SIZE="4"]Matt Forte vs. ColtsForte is one of the highest ranked rookies in the 2008 class. Forte is the No. 1 back in Chicago after former first-round pick Cedric Benson was released. For Forte’s first game he faces the defending AFC South champion Colts in prime time in the first regular season game at Lucas Oil Stadium. Couple that with a relatively inexperienced quarterback in Kyle Orton, and it might not be great experience for the rookie in his first game. While the Colts were a mediocre 15th in rushing yards allowed last season, they were a stingy fourth in yards per carry allowed and ninth in touchdowns allowed. Forte could be one of the better rookies in 2008, but his first game might not make the highlight reel. [SIZE="4"]John Kasay vs. Chargers Kasay has been with the Panthers since they first entered the league in 1995 and has made 81 percent of his kicks in his 17-year NFL career. Kasay again figures to be one of the league’s more accurate kickers but might get few attempts in his Week 1 matchup against the San Diego. The Chargers were 31st in the league with just 13 made field goals allowed last season and surrendered just 33 touchdowns. With star wide receiver Steve Smith suspended for two games, scoring might be difficult for the Panthers in the season’s opening week. |
