Blind and Carrick should shore it up at the back if both in midfield. Hererra box to box. Di Maria in a free role. Rooney in his best position. All the forwards work hard. Blind and Hererra to support the full backs.

Really hope Herrera takes his next chance. There's probably an issue there of him wanting to drift up the field and affect the game more as a no10 as he did often at Bilbao. He's definitely got the tenacity and the work-rate to be a pure midfielder, so he should be looking to pressure Rooney out of that role, because Wazza being the hub of the team with his erratic use of the ball isn't helping us.

Yeah. Mata still to come in and play his part in most home games, at the expense of probably Blind with Di Maz dropping back a bit...

Not sure I'm entirely sold on the idea of Di Maria being a wide player in a front-three. I don't think he has enough of a goal threat from that area, and his crossing hasn't impressed me that much.

He seems at his most dangerous when he runs at teams from central midfield, which is precisely where he looked so good for Real Madrid last season, and United early this season.

The Carrick-Herrera-Blind triumvate is destined to be like the fabled Carrick-Hargreaves-Scholes combination that seemed so obvious but never played together isn't it

That midfield, ffs. Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez in front, and Rio and Vidic behind. Would have given the Barcelona of 2009-2011 a serious game.

Instead we had the likes of Anderson, Park, Valencia and Hernandez involved in those Finals. With Michael Owen making the squad. :shakehead:

Hargreaves wasn't that impressive in central midfield in the games he did play tbf. Wasn't first choice after the turn of the year and ended up at right back towards the end.

Evra and VDS too.

Right back? Brown was ok - was neville still ok then?

Everyone at the time thought it was with Carrick pushing on and. The Cougar holding back. How wrong they were

One of Hargreaves better games was when he actually had more freedom to get forward vs Roma in the second leg.

He wasn't but that was the midfield widely envisioned when he signed.

Brown was excellent all of 2007/08 IIRC, probably his best season for the club, including that cross for Ronnie
