Ok, though regardless of the set up or quality of the opposition there are things a number ten can do to proactively unsettle and disjoint a defence, which in turn creates space and opportunity for those around him. Make intelligent runs (goal four), have the technique, vision and quick mind to do the unexpected (goal two) and take responsibility for making things happen rather than reacting to things that are already happening, or in our case up to that point, not happening.

Herrera does all this. Januzaj does not. Maybe some day he will, but it's not now. Putting aside the fact it was Brugge for a sec, that was the first time we have fully flowed since our best run at the tail end of last year. Now we need to replicate again against better teams.

I can't put aside that it was Bruges tbh. 7-1 on aggregate says it all, considering we've scored twice in 3 games in the league.

last night told us nothing much we didn't already know about the players, and told us nothing much about which is our 'best' tactics and formation either.

Not often I agree with throb but he's right.

Bruges are shit and the fact Rooney looked like a worldie against them proved that.

You can only play against who you play against. Yes, Brugge were poor, but Villa and Newcastle are not exactly Barcelona either yet we looked blunt against them, no matter what Van Gaal says. The common denominator in all this, dating back to last year, is to have a dynamic intelligent three behind the lone striker. For me Herrera can no longer be justifiably omitted from that three. Januzaj may end up being a top player, but I think he needs to go somewhere within the Prem with a forward thinking manager where he will play every week. Then we see.

but they sat back

when newcastle were open for the 1st 20 minutes the game threatened to go exactly like it did last night. as soon as they tightened it up until the moment LVG brought on another striker, a different type of striker, it was tough going.

i honestly can't remember much about our attacking play against villa, other than mata was decent and januzaj was lively and scored the goal from mata's pass.

anyway, basically for me he needs to get mata and herrera together in the line-up, and make the rest fit. but that doesn't mean he can just click his fingers and play the same system and personnel every game. and herrera himself knows his own weaknesses re positional discipline if you hear him speak.

don't be an arse. herrera is better than januzaj at everything, irrespective of the opposition. if you can spot that bruges were a bit shit, why can't you see januzaj is a bit shit and.... even when he included herrera h1, van gaal was a bit shit too?

herrera should play the attacking midfield role. whoever we are playing.
