Depends what you mean by working on their games. Fergie and his coaching team took the same approach as mourinho. Muelesnstein made such a comment one year. The expectation is they know how to play or they wouldn’t have been signed. You set out the basic shape of the team, get them organised, and let them play. The rest is down to training drills sharpening skills, and self motivation. Hence ronaldo developing and developing and Rooney not.
One of the reasons van gaal and moyes lost the players’ respect was because they were telling seasoned pros how to play. International players don’t take kindly to being told they don’t know how to do basic things they’ve spent their career doing. Van gaal telling Rooney how to shoot and such. Or moyes telling Ferdinand to study jagielka.

In almost any field of management, one of the most important paths to success is focusing on the basics. Just assuming people know what they should be doing is a recipe for failure

Fergie a failure?
