He was pretty poor earlier in the year, maybe it was the weight of the captaincy, the injuries etc, but the past 2 months he’s been superb.

Agree on false 9. What suits him, and the team, is that he is taken out of the midfield three and allowed to do what he is best at in the final third rather than running around the pitch trying to put out fires.

He’s probably, justifiably feeling slighted after the ‘everyone is for sale, apart from the kids’ line a few weeks ago.

That, his end of season form and the contracts some of the #@&%!s are on make it a good time to test the waters.

Yeah think this is all contract tactics. He knows he's loved here (aside from a few e-#@&%!s) and will want to win more. Hopefully he sees enough green shoots after last season.
