Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed there would be a House of Commons inquiry if Manchester United got as many penalties as Manchester City.

The number of penalties City get at the Etihad Stadium has been the subject of debate for the past two years.

Since the start of 2010-11, they have been awarded 21 spot-kicks.

In the past three games on home soil alone they have got four, two against Aston Villa and one each in the draws with Real Madrid and Everton.

And, ahead of his own side's visit to City on Sunday, Ferguson has cheekily raised the issue.

"The number of penalty kicks they get - 21 in the last year or something like that," said Ferguson.

"If we got that number of penalty kicks there'd be an inquiry in the House of Commons. There'd be a protest."

This season though, United have had more than City this season, only to miss four of them.

It piles the pressure on referee Martin Atkinson ahead of this weekend's game, which Ferguson accepts has risen markedly in profile since the days when he claimed Liverpool were United's true rivals.

"Liverpool and United games over the last 25 years have been unbelievable," said Ferguson.

"They've always been the most important games.

"It's shifted because at this moment Liverpool aren't challenging for the league like City are.

"City are our biggest threat and we're their biggest threat, so that's changed.

"Their fortunes changed the minute Sheikh Mansour took over.

"We know the minute that happened it was going to be a different ball game altogether.

"But, as we have in the past, we have to accept their challenge like we did when Chelsea came along and when Arsenal overtook Liverpool in the early 90s.

"We have to do it again."

Great timing for yet another injury holocaust.
All our creative midfielders too. Happy days.

De Gea

Rafael
Rio
Evans
Evra

Carrick
Powell *
Fletcher *

Rooney
Welbeck
Van Persie

* obviously Powell won't start. It'll be Scholesy instead :shakehead: ...Fletcher should be nowhere near the first 11 on current form, but we have no other choice.

Great plan to spend all summer chasing that Brazilian winger (who's name I can't even remember) rather than addressing central midfield again.

I see Valencia is still a 'few weeks away'. How typically vague.

I'm usually fairly positive, but we are totally £#%&!ed for Sunday. If we had a full squad and we playing well, I'd fancy us, but there'll be far too many players out there on sunday who shouldn't be anywhere near the side. The defence and midfield is absolutely all over the place and I think we'll need to score at least twice to get anything.

He'll go with

DDG

Rafael
Evans
Rio
Evra

Fletcher
Carrick
Scholes

Young
Rooney
RVP

Apart from maybe Jones or Rooney in midfield, I can't see many other options.

Can't see anything other than a city win albeit they would be there for the taking if we had any semblance of a half decent established team.

To be in a situation where I'm praying that an overweight inconsistent soft arse player somehow becomes miraculously fit again for Sunday is a mark of how %@#$&!sed we are.

Can go either way 2bh, all depends on the Tombola.

Think this game is made for Fletcher though.

Fletcher of 3 years ago certainly. But despite a nice moment for him with the goal against QPR he's looked very laboured since coming back..out muscled & certainly out paced time & time again.

He'll have to play though because there's no £#%&!er else.
I'm just hoping Powell or even Jones get the nod over Scholes. If Scholes starts, especially alongside Carrick & Fletcher we will lose the game. No ifs, buts or maybes...it'll be sad to watch

Toure, Nasri & co will swarm all over him.
You've only got to watch videos of every performance he's put in this season.
His reaction time is slower, he dwells on the ball, he doesn't press the opposition at all when we don't have the ball, he doesn't move forward with the ball...& he's a red card waiting to happen (he's been booked every game he's played this season hasn't he??)
My all time favourite United player, but he's a liability now.

You didn't pick him in your insane doghnut line-up so I'm not quite sure why you're so touchy about me leaving him out too.

I'd take that midfield now 2bh.

What a shambolic state of affairs this midfield is now. :shakehead:
