What's the deal with Portugal and Spain, do they like each other or historic beef? Just from a map and culture pov, seems pretty odd they not one country. I'm waiting for a takeaway and this is the best my brain can think about.

Very much historic beef. But enough about your takeaway... Spain as a unified country is very much an early modern construction and it is pretty unstable, the Catalans and Basques don't have much time for it. But at the same time the Spanish and Portuguese royal families intermarried a lot, a couple of times when the king of one died without heirs the king of the other inherited the country but that never lasted long.

Portugal will probably win this. Spain will do their usual thing of stifling but then let in a comedy goal or two.

Mrs and her family don’t dislike them but see themselves as different and get annoyed at people presuming they’re similar in culture etc.

I always back Portugal but I’m not opposed to winding her dad up in particular if they lose. Probably won’t do that tonight as I feel like it’s the international equivalent of Benfica vs Sporting Lisbon and they take that really seriously so…

Did the Muslim lads take Portugal as well as Spain or did they repel? Granada is always mentioned as last strong hold..

Risky off topic chat so will add - don't care about the result of this game

They did. I might be wrong but presumably that place Fátima's name dates from that time, but their reconquista happened before Granada, though a lot later than "my" bit of Spain, Asturias which was where the fightback started.

As with Nedders, I'm backing Spain but reserve the right to needle my father-in-law should they lose.
