This is where people become outraged that Lionel Messi, who scored 51 goals for title-winning Barcelona, is regarded as the best.

Nah, it was a defender for an attacking team that finished 2nd, mate.

I love the idea that there are genuinely people out there - not just scousers - going "Messi the best? Fix!"

Defenders £#%&! off. It’s all about who’s behind them in the sticks and what’s protecting them in front. Van Dijk would look mediocre in this united side let’s get it right.

He would improve us massively tbh.

Glad he didn’t win though.

Didn't liverpool ship a fair few goals in CL too (which, let's face it, is what this award is based on)?

Love everyone coming out and saying he was the best player in Europe last year.

Everyone suddenly a La Liga and Serie A expert.

Only liverpool fans could Express outrage at something as standard as a defender not winning the balon dor.

I'm sure it never used to get this much attention.

I couldn't give a £#%&! about it when united were good.

Koeman scored 17 goals from sweeper in a season where Barcelona won the European Cup. Didn't even get on the podium that year.

People prefer attackers. It's not new.

32 and still winning these with ease. Ronaldo top 3 at 34 too

I doubt we'll ever see it again. Like the Rock and Stone Cold at the same time.

That was new award they made up to placate scousers.
