I chuck a tin of green beans in for a last couple of hours.

Bloody lovely

is this not the exact same as putting stuff into a pot on the stove and then turning down the heat. I don't understand why you need a specialised tool for this when the function is built into every cooker.

Or am I missing something? I do a lot of stews that i leave on a low heat, go out and then come back later without one of these magical slow cookers.

No idea what they are - random goulash pic off the internet, i don't instagram my food.

Mine looks more like this, minus the green decoration, usually with rice or mash, but occasionally some crusty bread.

Stove = naked flame or exposed element.

Slow cooker = the hot bit is self-contained.

Chuck the food in, put on low for 8 hours, jobs a good 'un.

nonsense.

that's like saying "leave the toaster on for 8 hours because it's self-contained"

your cooker isn't going to suddenly explode because you aren't in the room.

Love to see documentation of people leaving a hob on low and their house exploding ever in history. It's never happened.

I do stews all the time and leave them for hours unattended.

This is one of my favourite meals, and better the following day. Particularly good if you shred the beef before serving. I like my chillis hot so add a couple in too. You donít really need the additional stock as liquid though as the tomato has enough.
