The paper is sometimes known as "The Grauniad". The term was coined by Private Eye on the basis of the paper's frequent typesetting errors, for which it became infamous in the era before computer typesetting. Many mistakenly believe the paper misspelled its name in its masthead; it only actually misspelled it on the header of one page.

they used to make spelling mistakes in quite often obvious places apparently and 'Grauniad' is an exaggeration for the purposes of comedy

It's an establishment poodle these days. In the days of Richard Ingrams' editorship, it was a genuine, cutting edge, hard hitting satirical magazine.
