But why do we expect so much? There's the money and then the reality. 35 year old Thiago Motta still starts in midfield. Lassana Diarra coming off the bench. Uncapped 28yo Spanish left-back. Uncapped French goalkeeper. Yes they have a sprinkling of quality but they set themselves expectations that lead to the manager being given ultimatums about beating Real Madrid or losing his job.
Yes, and Madrid are starting Vasquez, Kovacic and Asensio in midfield with an out of form Benzema leading the line. The midfield trio are all good players and the latter 2 may go on to be exceptional but this is not Madrid Prime as competition.

Look at the team Fergie put out in his last ever European game against Madrid, Cleverley, Welbeck, 39yo Giggs, Nani, Rafael, put up a hell of a fight.

I am not even saying that I expect PSG to win but I want to see a sign that they understand how to play in a big game, are adaptable to conditions and the pressure. Symptom of dominating a bad league, growing comfortable with your flaws and only knowing one way to play. I look at their line up and see a lot of guys with questions marks over their mentality. They need to start targeting more serious players, get rid of talented mental midgets like Di Maria, Draxer and Pastore. Problem is the type of players they need do not want to waste their time in France.

Very much so. Was going to mention lack of leadership, which is brought into focus when you play against Barca or Real with all their experience and know-how. Thiago Silva's captaincy has been called into question, both at PSG and with Brazil, for whom he refused to take a penalty at the World Cup which sent many mental. I think Dunga took the armband off him towards the end of his tenure.

Easy to be seduced by the talent they have. Cavani, Di Maria, Neymar and Mbappe on form is hard to match. But you look at the bigger picture and it's just not a side you'd back in a big game. Finding those leaders is hard these days, as we are finding out.

As long as Ronnie is fit and firing, you can never count them out. I'm amazed that some have been doing so, tbh.

Everyone at the time was saying how refreshing it was to see a side do so well playing an old fashioned 442
Correct.

It was fairly fluid to some extent, and Mbappé certainly did drift out wide from time to time, as did Falcao. You’d struggle to find many games where he did so enough to warrant being described as playing out wide though

They're playing Real Madrid. How do they get to a situation where it's beat Real (without Neymar) or the PSG manager walks?

Could understand if it was like City last year getting knocked out by Monaco. But they're getting done by Barca and Real. Hands up imo

PSG's problem is at the first sign of trouble their heads fall. Their culture is making one player the symbol of the club (Neymar now, Zlatan before) - everybody else bows down to them. Including the manager.

That's ok to a point given their domestic competition. They will put four past the likes of Dijon and Poirot at 60%. But in the UCL, you require your squad to have the synergy and courage to rise to the occasion. Real Madrid haven't won three of the last four simply because of Ronaldo. Barcelona at their best were not just Messi FC.

PSG looked out of their depth against Pellegrini's City when he was dead man walking.

People will cite Bayern Munich and Juventus as examples of teams who walk their league and go far in the UCL. Difference is it's a privilege to represent those clubs. Historic clubs who have had greats of the game wear the shirt and who fight for the highest honours. The present day players are compared to the past. Being a flop at a club of that prestige is still the pinnacle for a lot of players.

PSG may not win a UCL yet this current era is their best. You can assemble as many shiny names as you like, we know they are mercenaries but you can't switch on and off intensity. How do you get intensity if the players don't care and don't have to care?

Mbappe looked like a rabbit in the head lights way too much weight on his shoulders last night. He is still just a kid tbf.

It was plain to see PSG just didn't think they could win without Neymar and so it proved.
