All the top European teams have a Football man that looks after transfers.. Ed should stick to what he seems to be good at, e.g. getting Sponsorship deals.

Spot on with this!
We need a triumvirate senior manager structure, Team Coach, Dir of Finance and Director of Football, the latter 'holds the ring' between the other two, they take's the longer term view, plans the succession for the manager/coach, ensure the clubs philosophy is maintained and built on. Most top coaches will stop three maybe up to five years with a club these days (assuming success) they will move on. You can bet City are already planning for the post -Pep period

We do need to spend some money - we need new, better players now. But we could've been a hell of a lot wiser with what we have spent, and the prospect of spending more doesn't inspire a load of confidence as we're not sure much has been learned.

Even this latest press release of course cites "marquee" signings, a chilling phrase at this stage.

We’ve spent badly over that period. Yes, Mou has bought turds like Miki and possibly Rom too but the majority of shit signings were under LVG
There's another of the issues, right there.

We failed to invest in the squad for a number of seasons, choosing to pursue a 'value' approach. This became a false economy when the cost of catch up shot up exponentially as the city & psg sovereign wealth investments ratcheted up the market when we were eventually forced to spend.

No silver bullet. Lots of different overlapping f*** ups. Woodward being involved in most, if not all of them.

Yep the value thing went out the window when Fergie and Gill left and Ed came in

The issue is a lack of vision and expertise when it comes to recruitment

Going from Moyes to LvG and then to Jose and giving them full control of transfers was always going to result in a dogs dinner of a squad

Some might think it's a good idea to give Jose full control on transfers (it's been hit and miss so far) but what if he f***s off in the summer then we get another big name manager in who has a completely different approach to football and we're back at square one in regards to the squad

I keep saying it but we need a top quality sporting director who has a clear vision to take control of our recruitment

The trouble is that doing that right now means committing ourselves to Mourinho's way of playing for the foreseeable.

Ugh.

That was post Fergie. In his last few seasons we definitely had a “value” approach. That left us with a turd squad that only Fergie could get a tune out of
