Apologies for that Jaffers.

A raw but polished track imo this one.

Didn't they also support The Clash on the White Riot Tour around that time?

I think so, yeah. They were managed by Don Letts (general cool bloke about town) who had strong connections with the Clash.

Actually I think he tried to manage them - he later admitted they were completely unmanageable!

Default U-Roy - Chalice In The Palace

I remember Don Letts well, especially his time in Big Audio Dynamite with Mick Jones

They sound a right bunch! Did you know they're still gigging and did the "Ladyfest" in Manchester last November....?

Your 3rd selection is by Jamaican-born reggae/dubster - Ewart Beckford, a song about smoking ganja with the queen in buckingham palace..

Why does this track make it...?

Yeah, I think they reformed a couple of years ago, I imagine they'd be absolute turd now but you never know I suppose.

No Fun - The Prefects were a great band, they had a song called Things In General that I really liked.

U-Roy - around the time of punk I also discovered the joys of marijuana smoking and reggae was by far the best music to get stoned to. There was a big punk/reggae crossover anyway and Rock Against Racism started around that time so it was natural for a lot of punks to get into their Jah Jah sounds.

I grew up in Cornwall and, much as we were beginning to get frustrated being stuck down there when there was so much happening in the cities, there were times when a bunch of us would be lying around on some sand dunes, stoned out of our trees and listening to some heavy Jamaican rhythms on someone’s (mono) portable cassette player and life seemed pretty well perfect.

This track is from a fantastic album called Dread In A Babylon. Every song on it is brilliant, well worth getting if you like your reggae music.

Ha ha, stoned bumpkins! :joint:

I understand he was the creator of "toasting" Jaff - care to fill the listeners in on what it is...

Toasting is rapping, it's shouting over records basically.

A lot of the deejays in Jamaica started trying to outdo each other by getting exclusive mixes of tunes. They would then shout at the crowd, trying to get them to dance and it led from there I think.

Sounds rubbish when you look at it like that doesn't it?

Default Kenny Smith - Lord What's Happening To Your People?

I enjoyed finding out about and researching U-Roy, the Dread In A Babylon album has been downloaded for future listening.

I also enjoyed finding out about your next selection.

From his One More Day career retrospective album, (I think), this is a Northern Soul classic. What memories does this evoke...?

I was getting into Northern Soul just before punk came along, there were a bunch of lads in Cornwall who would drive up to Wigan every fortnight to go to the Casino. This was in the mid seventies and there wasn’t the road network we have now – it took some dedication I can tell you.

Anyway, punk distracted me for a while but I got back into Northern in the early eighties when I got fed up with rock music. I used to go to the 100 Club in London for all-nighters and this record reminds me of that time.

I remember once I snorted so much sulphate that I thought my heart was going to break through my chest! I decided the only way to calm it down was to burn off some energy so I started running around the dance floor. Unfortunately I ran and skidded on a huge pile of talc that some dancer had spread about to aid his moves and I went flying arse over tit in the middle of the 100 Club. Not my finest moment.

This record could have been any of a thousand great Northern tunes to be honest. I just plucked this one out but it is a belting song about how we’re going to hell in a handcart. Fortunately Kenny reckons he knows the answer to our problems; what we need is a love revolution, apparently.

I didn't know there was an album of his stuff out there, I'll have to try and track it down.

Stop butting in, you're not meant to interrupt the transmission while its going on. Wait and post any comments at the end of the broadcast.
