Signed by the club we bought him off only five weeks previously on a free. His buyout clause was raised from £600K to £7M a couple of days before United went in for him too iirc Shameless stuff from Frogson & his pals.

Oh they swooped alright...Swooped for Ozil and Khedira, as our midfield lay in ruins

Probably the strangest and most suspicious transfer of modern times

At the time we probably didn't think it could get worse than the previous summer's 3 headed transfer monster of Owen, Valencia and Obertan to replace Ronaldo but then we top it the following summer by signing a bum

You have to hand it to Mendes as he obviously got a friend in Marca put on their front page the day we signed him that Madrid were after "the jewel of Vitoria Guimaraes " to add an air of legitimacy to what was obviously the most bungtastic transfer of all time

One of the most obvious money laundering transfers in history.

People tend to ignore that Quieroz recommended Bebe to Ferguson who had never actually seen him play. Mendes was Quieroz' agent.

Just done a good search for "Bebe Mendes"

Fair to say the results were't football related.
