I thought he would be one of the first out the door given how poor he was on the ball

He's still not the best passer but he's taking responsibility back there when defending and when on the ball to come forward with it

I have total faith in the manager tbh. Smalling has turned his game around completely in the last 3-4 months.

He'll be starting for England soon.

Easy to forget he's only 25.

As Jones (and his contract) expires next season, guess van Gaal isn't convinced by him yet.

With the emergence of Paddy he might be toast in the summer.

He's been great all season when he's played (Southampton 1st half aside).

I am looking forward to this time next year when Sparky will hopefully be making a similar post about Jones

Amazingly, they have both improved vastly when playing in their best position consistently. Smalling coming in to his peak years, probably the best athlete at CB in England.

Utd have the best group of young CB's in the PL.

You don't have to be a member of the playing squad to be able to put the cones out in training.
