2006 was great

Apparently South Korea can still go through if they beat Germany by two and Mexico beat Sweden. Son is going to play the game of his life otherwise his days as a professional footballer are numbered.

Same as Panama then. England could've scored another 5 had they fancied it.

I doubt El Salvador's opposition brought on their equivalent of Fabian Delph either..

Definitely premature given all the El Salvadoreans who have scored in the World Cup since then.

Tiny counties shockingly kinda looking to enjoy the moment.

Best WC so far since France 98. Not a single 0-0, Mad Pat, some fantastic goals and Ronnie has stepped up. Absolutely loving it.

Ok.

Hate to repeat myself but this thread, right here, is about quality - not entertainment.

By your metric, England are the best team in the tourney. Your words.

How do you quantify quality? If you are arguing the top teams aren't at the level of previous editions then there is some merit to that, by the same token a lot of the traditionally weaker teams have upped their level, certainly tactically and there are (probably) fewer walkovers.

Yep, all of this and plenty of drama already with the late German goal keeping them in and the Argies woes. Some people have very selective memories about previous World Cups.

The drama stakes should be upped as we hit the knock-out stages too.

Not long ago people were complaining about all the 1-0s, last night some were claiming there were too many goals

The weaker teams are tactically stronger. But no real surprises (e.g. Cameroon in '90).

Still no stand out side. Everyone looks beatable. Pretty low quality.

It's really hotting up. Delighted with the farce that is VAR, too. Been an unexpected dramarama tool.

Thumbs up

Turned out to be a dreadful thread but maybe reverse cursed this into a great tourney? Perhaps too generous. Just a dreadful thread.

So a standout team is the criteria, which world cups had a standout team and thus qualify as a high quality tournament?
