Hardly 'not getting the chances'.
fair enough, but i think the point that fergie is no more or less willing to give young defenders a chance than attackers is a fair one.

True, defenders tend to be a little more consistent though. It is far easier to destroy than create and there is less pressure involved, to an extent.

I want him to give some of the midfielders a go. James, Eikrem, Cleverley, Drinkwater, Hewson all knocking about, none likely to get a game though. Stunts their progression. Then you see Arsenal throwing in Eastmond, who nobody had heard of, and he does a good job.

Could do with showing a little more faith maybe.

yeah, but mistakes get punished more harshly. and a lot of defending is experience and strength.

i think charlton's old saying is on the money. if you're good enough...

fergie knows what he's doing. there isn't another manager who comes close in terms of bringing through young talent.

I said it before Fergie did last season and no one took any notice.

the lad has bags of potential. of course he's going to be inconsistent and the world cup might be a year too soon for him but he's a fantastic talent imo. good to hear he's got a good head on his shoulders as well.
Think you're getting a bit confused here.

He played on the wing on Tuesday night.

He played up front in the league cup semi and league cup final.

He played on the left vs everton in the semi.

Welbeck's an interesting one.
I'd like to see him get more of a chance in the first team.
At the minute he seems to thrive in the Carling Cup - possibly because of the standard of opponent, but more likely due to his frame of mind.
When you're picked to play in the Carling Cup as a United youngster, you know you're supposed to be playing...that's the way it is.
I think he relaxes & feels at home in the side.
When he steps up & get's a game in the Premier League I think it puts him on edge...you can see his body language become more tense & more self concious.

It seems no matter how good some of these young players are, it's an absolute mountain to climb to get anywhere near a regular first team spot.

I still believe he's got a very good chance though...although there's no way in the world he's off to South Africa next Summer

I personally thought Welbeck played a lot more centrally on Tuesday. He has been quite poor in his last few outings on the wing imo.

He was definitely on the wing, he may have drifted in at times.

I bet he wouldn't score if he tried it again.

He'd shin it out for a throw in all day long if he tried that again. Probably take out some random full back in the process.
