heartfelt tribute from lee dixon there on the champions league highlights, who said when he was a youngster, he always wanted to look like wilkins did in his kit

beeb's press review just had three women talking about the heartfelt tributes to wilkins. one of them mentioned she watched her children play football. don't think the other two have even been through the process necessary to produce offspring. shameful. they might as well have been discussing jimi hendrix's playing style.

Baresi led a tribute to him before the Milan derby.

Yes, you can imagine that, 'Butch' Wilkins, always looked the part, am sure sideways passing was invented by him, but good player RIP Ray!

Very sad. Dunno.. one of those I just didn’t see coming despite health rumours. Genuine nice bloke.

As a player; underwhelming for most of his United career but it always seemed he played within himself. Maybe lack of self belief. Maybe the weight of being a United player was too much. Certainly appeared that way because as soon as he knew he was off to Italy , he became a different player. Magnificent in his last season. Shame that’s all we got from him and Robbo together but at least he showed us what he could do before he left. Proved what a quality player he was but never had the self belief to express it until the pressure was off. Probably explains some of his inability to cope, generally. A bit less self introspection and could’ve been one of the game’s greats. Did alright.
