Newspapers in Spain have gaffed by identifying Vinnie’s “teenage daughter” as the youngster Carragher spat at - and the ex-footballer-turned actor as the man who filmed the shock incident. Vinnie, who speaks with a cockney accent unlike the mystery dad filmed goading Carragher after Man U’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday, has got a son Aaron, 25, and stepdaughter Kaley, 29, but no teenage boy or girl. But readers of leading Spanish daily El Mundo and Barcelona-based El Periodico have been told Vinnie and his non-existent teenage daughter were in the car Jamie spat at. El Mundo headlined a piece published on its website: “Carragher, suspended by Sky Sports for spitting at the 14-year-old daughter of Vinnie Jones.” It claimed in its article: “As evidenced by the video retired footballer Vinnie Jones has made public, the now-Hollywood actor was ‘having a laugh’ at Carragher’s expense, as he himself has admitted in a subsequent interview. The same gaffe was repeated by several other Spanish news outlets including El Periodico, which carried the same headline as Madrid-based El Mundo, and Mediaset Spain which is the largest television network in the country. And many others were clearly left with the wrong impression Vinnie was the real villain. One wrote: “For me the father is to blame for driving in a car with his daughter and filming an ex-footballer.” Another recalled the moment the ex-Wimbledon midfielder famously grabbed Paul Gascoigne’s privates in the 1988 FA Cup final, and said: “Jamie, you’re really clumsy. Everyone knows Vinnie. “And if you don’t know who he is, look him up on the Internet from his playing days. The most iconic image is the one when he’s with Gascoigne, giving him a good squeeze. It hurts me just thinking about it.” |
