Michael Carrick announces his departure from Manchester United

• Stand-in manager leaves the club after 3-2 defeat of Arsenal
• Carrick served United for 15 years as a player then coach

Michael Carrick has decided to step down as Manchester United’s first-team coach and leaves the club following the conclusion of his spell as caretaker manager with Thursday’s 3-2 defeat of Arsenal.

With Ralf Rangnick confirmed as the new interim manager earlier on Thursday, Carrick has decided to leave the club, having served as assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who was sacked last month. Carrick signed for United as a midfielder in the summer of 2006, before retiring in the summer of 2018 and joining the coaching staff.
