Transfer sagas from yesteryear

I was thinking whether our transfer incompetence is a recent thing or whether we’ve always had years where it hasn’t gone as planned.

I can’t think of many:

87(?) Glenn Hysen, and we ended up with Mal Donaghy.

I think it was 88 we were linked with Hysen. He joined Liverpool in 89 and we signed Pallister.

Fergie really wanted David Hirst. Tried for him twice.

Am I right in remembering we were in for Kerry Dixon at some point?

Gaitan from Benfica was a popular transfer rumour in the early 2010s. Think he played well against us once in a Champions League group stage game that Giggs scored a nice long distance goal in and from that night onwards was constantly on the verge of joining the club.
