Mourinho is and has always been a pragmatist - and it's probably what you need to be a successful manager over a long term. Mistakes cost you dearly.
He picks reliable dependable players who can deliver his game plan. As Jem says shouldn't be any surprise. Would you rather lose 4-3 in a feast of football or win 1-0? |

better to pick a proper midfield than to play six across the back and invite pressure, for example, if you are jose. because then, if you concede, you have failed in every sense - no clean sheet, no entertainment, no common sense. we've all been watching united long enough to know that the best form of defence is attack. we don't do rearguard actions. and I don't mean being cavalier. just sensible and not handing initiative to the other team. if we had better defenders and a solid midfield, it would never be necessary to load the defence with lukewarm bodies. if you want to play death is not an option, the question should be whether you would prefer two stirring wins and a glorious defeat or three gutless insipid draws. for united, how you win is important as winning - both essential to "success". |

Neither do we have full backs or wing backs who can cross though Young could probably do it on the right to some degree. Shaw is log jamming the left back slot - Borthers would do a better job . So Mourinho is, it seems, always compromising too many square pegs and round holes. Don't get Herrera - where does he play? I can see how you might pick him to do a man marking job as Pip once did but he can't really open up defences. 3-5 -2 covers up the inadequacies but at the same time handicaps you as the essential cogs aren't there - attacking wing backs and a ball playing centre half. + a proper No 10 so he's basically short of 4 first team players and in all four it's the ability to construct attacking play that's missing. |
