Football Mathematics the Rafa Benitez way

If you've got a striker who you pay £20.3 million for and then sell him only 6 months later for £12 million, how much money do you waste?

With this in mind do you feel qualified to have more ownership of footballing matters at the club?

RAFA: KEANE A GREAT PARTNER FOR TORRES Jimmy Rice

Rafa Benitez believes Robbie Keane can be the perfect foil for 33-goal Fernando Torres next term.
The Anfield boss sees the pair as a lethal combination of guile and pace capable of firing the Reds to glory in 2008-09.

Speaking exclusively to Liverpoolfc.tv after the 28-year-old signed last night, Benitez said: "We were looking for a player with game intelligence and good movement who could play alongside Torres.

"He can play with Torres up front and also on the right.

"We knew he was a Liverpool fan since forever. We knew that he was a very good signing in terms of the commitment, the quality and the intelligence of the player.

"He is a player who can give to us a lot of goals – normally he gets about 15 each year. We were looking for the workrate he can give to us, the game intelligence and also the goals."

Keane scored an impressive 107 goals in 253 appearances for former club Tottenham – but the penalty box isn't the only place Benitez believes he'll have an impact.

The Reds manager thinks his new boy will have a positive effect on team morale.

"He has experience in the Premier League and also all the reports of his personality and professionalism are fantastic. He can be a good example for the young players," said Benitez.

"I feel like he has enough experience in the game and that he has a very good mentality. He is very hungry, so everything is positive."

After being unveiled to the press this morning, Keane could travel with his new teammates to Villarreal.

Whenever he does make his debut, it is likely to be in the number seven shirt.

Benitez added: "Yes, we were talking about the number, and the big names that have had this number, so it will be inspirational for him to have it too."

One of the first questions fans will be asking when Keane does finally make his bow is whether they'll see his famous cartwheel goal celebration.

The man himself says it would be rude not to bring it out once for the Kop, though Benitez has told supporters not to expect spectacular celebrations week in, week out.

He said: "We will talk. It is important to score and also to celebrate afterwards, but he has to be careful just in case!"

There is no way Liverpool have lost that much.

They would rather have kept him.

More like Liverpool had paid £10m of the £20.3m fee and sold him back to Spurs for £12m and the 2nd payment from Liverpool is cancelled.

Ginners, you're a gullible £#%&!er where spuds are concerned.

are you stupid?

do you think you are the little wise one who thinks spurs have lost money in this deal.

liverpool are cutting their losses because keane will be worth less in the summer and probably want an end to the media attention leaving out keane is giving them.

spurs will have profitted.

meaning if spurs have recieved £10m for keane, they will get another £2m in the summer or something. meaning spurs are better off.

liverpool have not made a profit here

Are you honestly that stupid? you crack me up. Oh yes, Harry and Levy have done stunning business

I'm just glad the dippers have sold him, I shall be eagerly awaiting the twang of Torres hamstring and the spectacle of Ngog leading their front line.

Spuds will continue in their battle with relegation.

It all works out nicely for me.

*initial fee*

Do you think Liverpool had paid the £20m?

Now, think about each clubs position. Liverpool look stupid enough, don't you think they would've insisted on the price remaining undisclosed rather than being published as an £8m loss to make them look even more stupid? Unless they didn't really lose any money?

Do you think spurs would want their fans to think that they had, in effect, paid £22m for a player they sold, after he insisted on leaving, for £20m 6 months earlier?

C'mon now, to believe that Liverpool just took an £8m loss and weakened their squad and made themselves look ridiculous, all in one fell swoop is just too much to ask I'm afraid.

The thing is Liverpool owed Spurs 9 million quid, now does this transfer fee include or not include the 9 million because if not it about breaks even and if so it is laughable.

Erm, they can't. Spurs have to announce any purchases over £10m to the stock market. Nice try anyway.

Bit weird that you're obsessed with making Liverpool look good in all of this though, you do realise we hate them right?

Didn't Spurs already spend the money they made on Keane bringing back Defoe for more than they sold him?

Not at all. Liverpool have and will suffer in magnificent style from this, but from a common sense pov, there is no way the numbers will fall as the Spurs fans on this board seem to think.

As I said earlier, it all works out perfectly for me anyway, Liverpool lose a player that could've been useful, Spurs have the same mediocre players that helped them achieve nothing and United carry on regardless.

It's the Spurs boys you need to have a word with, they are far more interested in Levy's apparent ability to make money through his shite transfer dealings, than United's success.

No no no, you have that wrong, Spurs re-signed Defoe for only £9m, and not the £15m reported, as they had a 40% clause on any future transfers, so Spurs gave pompey £15m, but pompey then gave them £6m back.

Well, according to Ginners anyway.

£#%&!ing Genius that Levy.

You should tell the press then, because they're all reporting the same thing.

They are reporting what they are TOLD to report by the clubs who, by pure coincidence, would both look a bit stupid if it were reported any other way.

At absolute worse, Liverpool will have broken even.

I'm not defending Liverpool at all. I am just saying that Spurs will not have made £8m on the deal. That is all.

No, you're saying they've probably made a profit on a player they were desperate to get rid of, even though every single media source is reporting that the Scousers have taken a significant hit on the deal. You know the best though, and the media are just spouting what they're told to because Liverpool don't mind looking stupid as they've made so much money on it or something. £#%&! me, have you turned into Throb?
