most teams who win the world cup probably have to beat 2 decent teams on the way. look at Argentina's run to the final - they played Saudi Arabia (lost), Poland, Mexico, Australia, Netherlands (drew), Croatia...
France beat Australia and Denmark, lost to Tunisia, then beat Poland, England (coin toss), Morocco.
this is the nature of tournament football.
when you talk about the strength of England's squad, it's not evenly distributed. Southgate cannot load the team with wide forwards and number 10s. Argentina and France have both been consistently successful in recent years by not overloading their team with attacking players but having a solid and functional team with space for a couple of stars. seems like exactly what Southgate is trying to replicate
