The smoother the ball's surface is (less seams/panels) the more likely it is to react strangely in the air win hit with no spin. Hence why you see Ronaldo trying his "Dipping Toe-bungs". Think about hitting a "flyaway" ball for an example. This is because the airflow is very energised close to the surface and reacts in a more chaotic manner.
But if you impart spin on the ball then the more panels it has on it will make it swerve more as true Aerodynamics kick in. I'm pretty sure that is how it works. Any pilots on here ?? If so, it's the same theory of Boundary Layer/Vortex generators on an aircraft wing. |
