Football The Premier League at 25 - Best Player

Eric

We can’t be putting Tina Turner on for just any old hero, nor merely for the most skilful. And the toughest, longest-lasting or most prolific can go whistle because only one player can be serenaded as simply the best and it must be the one who has done more than any other to shape the Premier League years. Show us another player who has radiated as much influence as Eric Cantona and we will show you a figment of your imagination.

Not about longevity, most goals, most years served etc just most "influential".

Considering time and place then Eric by a country mile.

Played 6 seasons in England and took home a league medal in 5, one exception being his accident in South London.

Pretty sure I love R.Keane (mufc footballer) as much as anyone (Keane Turin 99 has to be up with Robbo Barca 83 for individual game/impact/performances), but can anyone say, hand on heart, had he not lost it at Selhurst we wouldn't have done 5 on the trot (6 for him).

No other player for me. Love loads. Robbo, Norm, Hughsie, Andrew, RVN, Scholes, Dolly and Daisy, Rio, Nemanja, Giggs, Scholes £#%&!ing loads.

But only one dieu 😎

But nobody did it like Eric

Eric brought star quality back to English football. There were so few high quality foreign players in the league at that time, mainly Scandinavian, not glamourous in any way. He was marketable, he had style and charisma and that bad boy, rebellious aura. Gold for the likes of Sky in those early days of the PL.

Euro 96 was very important as well, perhaps the moment when the re-branding of the sport stuck, appealing to the more casual fan.

Eric, Henry, Ronaldo, think they would be the 3 most important for the brand of the PL during this 25 years, then the likes of Shearer, Giggs, Bergkamp, Keane, Rooney etc. Put Beckham among those first 3 as well, not many players could drive the media hype like he.

Before last season the only current player you had seen play was Carrick.

Now there is an over-rated player tbh. Though tbf it was partly because he was a nice guy, i suspect.
