A large part of the blame has to go to the top teams though.

Barcelona don't have a lot of top Spanish players because they've bought them. They have them because they have produced them.

Victor Valdes since he was 13.
Pique since he was 10 (left for a few years obviously)
Iniesta since he was 12.

Not sure that is really comparable with us nicking people at the age of 17.

Levante might have eleven Spanish players, but they're all shit.

And they also have that big spanner Caceido who used to play for citeh. Where's he from? Ecuador I think?

We do get players younger than 17, pretty sure Petrucci and Pobga were younger (could be wrong)

It was more the process of acquiring a lot of cheap young talent and filtering out the worst, which is pretty common among top clubs but we have been at the forefront in the UK

I'm not sure you can really level the same accusation at Barcelona with their youth development.

If anything, they are at times a victim of the practice of clubs like United robbing their talent. See Pique, Fabregas & others.

They spend more on their youth set up than anyone else. Unsurprisingly, it yields the best results. There was a ridiculously talented Spanish side in this years European under 19 championships (they ended up losing in the final, but took the piss throughout the tournament). Of an 18 man squad, 7 of them were from Barcelona and they had been their since they were young kids. The top scorer in the tournament was Pacheco, who Liverpool 'nicked' from the Barcelona system.
