With a back-three you need a leader who can take charge and organise the back line. A back-three of Jones, Evans and one of Blackett/McNair is far too young and inexperienced, and has no stand-out leaders. Evans is 27 next month yet still acts and plays like a teenager.

IMO the reason Carrick has to drop in is because Van Gaal clearly can't rely on anyone else. Wouldn't be surprised to see him there permanently in the New Year, with Blind playing the holding midfield role.
