The league is won with a strong spine, so De Gea, Vidic, Carrick and RVP all need to stay fit and have excellent seasons. If we don't sign a defensive midfielder the most important out of that lot is probably Carrick, so he will be the key man, just like he was this season.
In terms of making the biggest impact on the team, and changing the style of play for the better, then it has to Shinji. And Thiago if he signs. A Carrick, Thiago, Kagawa midfield with Powell, Giggs and Cleverley as back-up would be immense.
