Apparently when the 'enquiry' board or whoever complained that the players didn't sing the French anthem, he replied 'was I supposed to hold a gun to their heads'?

Marcel Desailly has called for captain Patrice Evra to be suspended for at least two months in the wake of France's dire World Cup campaign.

France crashed out in the group stage amid huge unrest in the camp, with Nicolas Anelka and coach Raymond Domenech involved in a bust-up which resulted in the Chelsea striker being expelled from the squad.

A subsequent strike by the players in protest at Anelka's expulsion added to the air of farce surrounding France's doomed campaign, which ended with the 2006 World Cup finalists finishing bottom of Group A with just one point and one goal to their credit.

The fallout from the fiasco accounted for French Football Federation president Jean-Pierre Escalettes, who resigned from his post having shouldered the blame for the dismal showing in South Africa, while Domenech left his role immediately after the World Cup to be succeeded by Laurent Blanc - although that had been decided prior to the tournament.

Desailly, who won 116 caps for France and helped Les Bleus to the World Cup trophy in 1998, and the European Championship title two years later, believes Manchester United defender Evra should also be held accountable.

"The Federation president and the coach have already paid the price," he told French newspaper Metro. "And I think that Evra, who is the origin of the strike, should pay too.

"The captain made a mistake and he has to assume the consequences of his actions.

"He decided not to train, before realising his mistake and apologising. But he deserves at least a temporary suspension.

"He is an excellent player, our best left-back, but he should be suspended for two months, because the captain is the first one to be an example.

"His behaviour affected the image of France throughout the world."

Can't really argue with that. I think Paddy let himself down a bit. But it will be a good learning experience.

He's a cheeky @#%&!, that's for sure

Raymond Domenech's lawyer has confirmed his client will seek a compensation payment of 2.9million euros (£2.5m) from the French Football Federation after his exit as national team coach.

Domenech led Les Bleus through their shambolic World Cup campaign in South Africa this summer, which marked the final act of an increasingly turbulent reign.

Matters on the pitch are beginning to improve under his successor Laurent Blanc, with successive 2-0 wins in European Championship qualifiers against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Romania and Luxembourg following a friendly defeat to Norway - with a shadow squad after Blanc suspended all those involved in the summer fiasco - and a shock loss to Belarus in their opening qualifier.

But the FFF remain under an interim president in Fernand Duchaussoy and the Domenech saga rumbles on in the background, with his representative Jean-Yves Connesson confirming his plans to seek the hefty payment.

Connesson told radio station RTL: "There is no acrimony, no animosity. Monsieur Domenech is simply surprised that there was a political decision taken by the federation, which is separate and in defiance of their code of conduct, to allocate personal responsibility for a collective crisis.

"Considering the extremely harsh conditions and the seniority of my client, we will demand the severance payment due to him as well as three years of salary, a lump sum of 2.9million euros."

deffo a touch of the Svens about him.

Evra, by the way, did not let himself down in the summer. he was misrepresented by his fellow 'pro's' and was very much between a rock and a hard place.

Not only that but he seems to have been hugely stabbed in the back by a number of french ex-defenders. If I were him I'd tell the french football federation to £#%&! £#%&!ing off if they tried to call me up again.
