Default Wayne Rooney 2014

Is he playing his best now since 2010? More importantly will he ever get near Alan Shearer?

Playing very well, prefer him in the position he is playing now than when he plays as an orthodox number 10.

As for the Shearer question, probably not, especially if he keeps playing this deeper position.

Yeah he's just turned 29, I can't see him playing in the prem until he's 35.

So he'd have to score about 20 premier league goals a season every season for 4 years. Not happening.

Depends how long he plays for. The general feeling when it comes to Rooney is that longevity will not be his strong point, but he loves playing, could see him back at Everton in his mid 30's and he is bound to close or beyond if still playing at that point. He looks in his best physical shape for a few years, plenty of energy in his game and a turn of pace back.

He's going to score 80 more league goals before he retires, no doubt.

He'll leave the record around 285 imo, he won't quit early at all.

Can't expect him to get near Shearer tbf
Shearer was an out & out goal machine. One of the best nqat

Fairly obvious statement but Rooney offers more than just goals.
This 'selfless' attitude does cause his form to be erratic at times but more often than not he'll be the key between us winning & not winning.

His assists record is pretty impressive too. Shearer by contrast isn't even on the list. Rooney is 4th or something like that behind Giggs, Lampard & Gerrard.

Rooney obviously fell out with Ferguson & it doesn't matter what your job is or how much money you make, if there's a frosty atmosphere between you & your boss it's bound to affect your performance.
Van Gaal rates Rooney very highly & you can see that in Rooney's current attitude.

That finish for his second yesterday was a throwback to Rooney of 2004! ..give the keeper the eye & slot it inside his near post.
Great to see him have that confidence back.

Where he's playing at the minute I can't see him getting above 25 goals for the campaign but that will do if Van Persie continues slotting them away.

29 now, if he is at Utd for another 3-4 seasons he could be close to 300 goals(currently 224) for the club, for all the criticism and frustration that he caused he is an extremely significant player in the history of English football.

300 goals could be a record that may never be bested.

Has a chance to break Shearer's record but only if he is consistently played right up top for a few seasons
Hopefully LvG will play him right up top once we get players back and not in midfield or in the number 10 role

He's our most dynamic centre forward

Hard pushed to get shearer's record, especially if he operates out of midfield more in the future.

I don't think he started the season playing too well. Did that Rooney thing of being effective without playing that well. But since he came back from his suspension, he's been very good. Very mature. Thought he was excellent at Arsenal and it was good to see him play such a big role in a 'top four' clash again.

He's looked more suited to a midfield role than he ever has before. It also solves the problem of accommodating him, falcao and rvp. Early days, but he seems very relaxed at the moment and certainly as happy and contented in his play and demeanour since 2010.

More of the same in these next two big games please.

Caught the last 5 mins of sky sports greatest prem xi this morning. Gerrard made that team with Vieira. No Keane or Scholes.

Reinvented, playing very well and justifying the faith the club had in him, was not always so, was a time not so long ago that he was a fat disinterested mess, kudos to him.
