Daniele de Rossi is Sir Alex Ferguson’s No.1 choice to replace Paul Scholes at Old Trafford

ITALIAN World Cup winner Daniele de Rossi is Sir Alex Ferguson’s No.1 choice to replace Paul Scholes at Old Trafford.

Starsport understands Fergie wants De Rossi, 27, to plug the gap in Manchester United’s midfield. Fergie admits it will be almost impossible to replace Scholes when the midfield veteran retires. Scholes, 36, is *mulling over signing a *contract extension and playing one more season for Fergie’s men.

He has told club officials he will make a decision *before the summer but he could choose to pack it in and bring the curtain down on his illustrious career.

Whatever he decides to do, Fergie knows he must find someone who can take his place in the United *engine room.

Fergie has long admired Roma star De Rossi, who has won 63 caps and figured in two World Cups for Italy.

He sent two of his senior scouts to watch De Rossi in Roma’s Serie A clash with Napoli last weekend.

He reckons the Italian is a younger version of Scholes and would bring experience and goals.

But Fergie would have to splash out around £14m to bring De Rossi to Old Trafford in the summer.

One stumbling block could be that Roma are in takeover talks with US *businessman Thomas Di Benedetto, a partner of the parent company of Boston Red Sox and Liverpool.

If a takeover goes through the new owners would only agree to sell De Rossi in a player exchange deal that could see Federico Macheda and Anderson travelling in the opposite direction.

Fergie would be reluctant to sell Anderson and might be forced to up his bid if he wants to secure a deal for De Rossi.

United, meanwhile, have been handed a boost with the news that Michael Owen will not miss the rest of the season.

The ex-England star pulled up in training with a groin problem and United feared he’d miss three months.

But scans have revealed the injury is nowhere near as bad as first feared and Owen could be back in *action within two weeks.

Lets face it he he'll cost more in the region of 20+ million having recently signed a contract. Nothing against the lad but do we really want to spend that much on potential which is what he really is at the mo.
If anything bang another 10 million on top of that and test Arsenal's resolve to keep hold of Wilshere who I think is worth the risk even at that kind of money.
Shame we are skint tho!!

£15m might be the opening bid but he'll surely cost a lot more. Che;sea had a £14m bid rejected last January:

Shit, Spurs are ready to lay down £15m for Connor Wickham.
