there's no way they'll be able afford to replace gerrard or torres with equivalents if/when they leave. can you name me one young player they have coming through? one? other than ngog there's nobody, not even one young player on the fringes of the first team. their first 11 is capable of playing at a decent level but as soon as you go beyond than it's a catastrophe. even their first 11 is littered with players who shouldn't be anywhere near a side challenging for top honours - that greek lad, maxi rodriguez, lucas etc.

what their deluded fans don't seem to grasp is that 6th or 7th place isn't some aberration but what they've got on merit on the basis of the quality of players they have. over the next few years spurs and city, probably everton and maybe villa will be consistently finishing above them because they, quite simply, have better players and/or better management. and without somebody bankrolling them, without a new stadium and without a decent youth set up they're just not going to be able to compete.

it's all so sad
And our future is so rosy at the moment

I disagree with that slightly, though admittedly only because a scouse mate of mine who knows his football is constantly incensed with Benitez playing players out of position, making bizarre substitutions, picking daft formations, etc. He often talks of the way he has taken on some decent talents (Keane, Aquilani, Riera), used them wrongly, 'ruined' them and £#%&!ed them off sharpish, and the way Gerrard has regressed in the past few years.

That said, I agree that a new manager would only be able to make them 'solid', and maybe take them to 6th instead of 7th.

If they were to get a shedload of money and Mourinho, however....

Despite the opposition of some of our fans here and elsewhere, that is maybe *the* clinching reason for getting Jose in........

So that the Vermin or the Bitters don't
