Both of which are tactical strategies, and not another thing to blame Chris Smalling for.

I don't like the lad but £#%&!ing hell.

I wasn't blaming it on him. I'm just making an observation.

one thing you can blame him for is his piss-poor weak marking at set pieces, his terrible decision making, his tendency to wrestle people and give away stupid free kicks, his comically bad distribution and lack of any kind of composure on the ball.

Very much agree with some of those, but our rivals have been playing guys like Lovren, Otamendi and Cahill in defence. All dodgy.

15-16: Best defensive record in the league
16-17: Second best defensive record in the league
Last season: Second best defensive record in the league. Only one goal more than City.

If we could sign a world class central defender, it's still not addressing our biggest weakness. Especially as Mourinho will never build a team to pass through deep midfield. Maybe a world-class centre-half like Godin would improve us a bit, but signing someone who is marginally better than what we have at CB was never going to change much. I think the board, whatever their motive, were right on that.

We conceded a lot of goals from set pieces last season as well.

Most teams do. Look at the World Cup - loads of the goals were set-pieces.

But again, we conceded one goal more than City last year. We scored 38 fewer.

It's clear what we need to improve, be it tactically, strengthening the attack or getting more from certain players.

But probably not £60m on Harry Maguire.

People seem to be under the impression defence and attack are independent of each other.

I reckon if Sanchez could manage a final pass now an then we'd score at least 10 more a season.
