Still, the route shows Abu Dhabi now know city’s support, and how little they’ve sparked the imagination. When they took over, they probably envisioned a huge ignition of a massive dormant fan base once they started winning things. I can only imagine their disappointment. Given the season they’ve had, this is as good as it gets.

Must admit, I always imagined city winning the league after so many years of failure would spark excitement that would wake up a dormant fan base similar to us in 93. It just didn’t. I imagine this isn’t what the Arabs thought they were buying.

Is that Dickov at the front of the second bus? Have they got a "legends" bus?

Just think, we only had one bus when we won the treble. Just another thing they eclipse us on.

And i was wondering what that other trophy was. Completely forgotten they’d won the league cup.

We had the largest active fan base. We also had a large dormant one.

Are you suggesting United’s average gates didn’t fluctuate in the 60s, 70s and 80s depending on how stimulated the support was by the football?

The capacity was 58k in the 80s and we hadn’t averaged over 50k since Docherty’s football excited the fan base. In 89, the United support got excited by the Fergie fledglings and the typical crowd of 35-40k went up to 55k for the quarter final of the cup. It then went back down when fergie brought back the old guard and the excitement was gone. I think in 89 towards the end of the season the gates had dropped to 20k for some games.

In the 80s the average gate had dropped to 35-40k. By 92 challenging for the league it was up to 44k (or was it 48?). By 96 and the ground expansion the average was up to 55k and would have been more if capacity allowed.

Are you suggesting united winning the league for the first time in 26 years had no stimulating effect on United’s fan base? And you have the nerve to call me loco.

Our average attendance in 92 was higher than the 2 seasons after we won the league.

Dormant.

Because of ground development and a fall in capacity. But let’s not let facts get in the way of your argument. There’s a reason they increased the capacity in 96 and not prior to 93.

For some reason, you appear to be arguing that united winning the league caused a fall in support.
