Default Next years Champions League

So at the moment we as Manchester United fans are pushing for a top four finish to secure Champions League qualification for next year and it would seem that the majority of fans would prefer Qatari ownership over anybody else.

However, If the Qatari`s do win the battle for ownership of United and do not relinquish their ownership of PSG, under the current rules of Uefa two teams cannot play in the competition if they are owned by the same owners.

The rule, introduced in the late 1990s, known as the 'Integrity of the UEFA Club competitions: Independence of clubs'. It states that no two clubs, operating in the same competition, can be directly or indirectly controlled by the same ownership group.

So does that put a big spanner in the works? Do we still want the Qatari`s? Will Uefa change the rules and face an uproar from every other qualifying team. Time will tell...

I dont even think theres even a 1% chance of Man United or PSG being kicked out of the Champions League whatever the conflict.

So in that scenario what happens if they draw each other? They are allowed to play and one puts a weaker team out or loses by a large margin and what would either teams fans feel after they lost?

No, everyone that matters in the process will pretend that the Qatar bid is completely independent despite it clearly not being, and then if any hard evidence comes out in the future proving what everybody already knows then it will be too late. More cash will change hands, or they'll just drag it out like City did and everything will carry on as normal.

Qatar obtained the rights for the biggest football tournament in the World through outright corruption, and even when it was proven and some FIFA officials arrested, they still hosted the World Cup. I doubt they're too concerned about UEFA and their rules.

Considering Red bull teams can prove they're independent. I'm sure the Qatari state will be fine

Sigh

  1. They might be told to
  2. It might look like they didn`t try as hard as the other team?
  3. They might look as if they have put out a weaker team?
