Need to play a more conventional formation that suits the players and plays them in positions they are more comfortable in

Not sure about Mata as part of a front 3 but Januzaj just hasn't played well enough to be selected
Januzaj needs to come on in the last 20 / 25 mins in games that we have already won to find his old form and confidence however there so few games against anyone where we are actually comfortable enough to do that

From now on we should only play with one centre forward so that means only selecting one of Rooney, Falcao and van Persie
Rooney can "do a job" in other roles but let's be honest we have players who play those roles better
Stick Rooney up top and get him doing what he does best which is score goals
No.

Still 1 player out of position is an improvement on the 4 or 5 players we are usually playing out of position

Mata has played wide at Chelsea before and played well

The full backs would be told to really push on and Carrick/Blind would drop back to cover them.

Di Maria told to play wherever he wants.
So basically quite a lot of the time it would look like this:

jones carrick rojo

rafael.......................shaw
...herrera blind
di maz

rooney falcao

You know there is a clear difference between attacking full backs and wing backs

A wing backs starting position is higher up the pitch and there is more of an expectation on a wing back to be able to beat the opposition's full back on 1 v 1s

There's a lot of %@#$&!s about formations tbh, not much difference between the £#%&!ing lot of them. Our main issue is not attacking with pace enough, and some of the £#%&!ers in our squad unable to pass and control a football consistently.

Well indeed, the full-back attacks space more than anything. But with little natural width or strikers working the channels that space is harder to come by against good organisation. So you probably end up putting similar emphasis on the full-backs to create individually.

I don't disagree with the team, tbf, I just don't think it's a world away from what we're currently doing. As it stands, we still get ourselves into plenty of good positions, but lack something in the final third.

LvG's deployment of Di Maria off the striker suggests to me that he sees the problems with the front pairings.

You're right about formations. The way the team plays is far more important than who goes where.

And you're also right about pace being a problem.

For me the biggest problem is we never 'get behind' the opponents defence. The reasons for this are twofold:
- We don't have enough urgency in our play (too happy to keep passing sideways)
- The attacking players aren't pulling defenders away creating space for each other.

Mata is the biggest problem on the later point. It's extremely rare that he bothers to try and make space for others.

RvP and Falcao (in the few times they've played together) tend to occupy the same space which again causes issues.

Falcao is the key to it working as he's the most unselfish. Rooney has scored a few lately as a result of Falcao's movement.

Everyone seems to be against 2 up front but it's ok if they're a 2 playing together properly. Unfortunately that doesn't look like it can happen with RvP and Falcao so for the foreseeable future it should be one or the other.

Personally I'd just stick Falcao up there on his own and have Rooney and Di Maria playing off him. They're far more likely to find space there and you'd hope that Falcao could occupy a couple of defenders on his own.

RVP might be fit. Looking forward to the absolute scenes on here if he starts ahead of Falko

If rvp is even 50% fit he'll play

Beginning to resent that £#%&!er, and it's not even his fault...

if rafael is fit:

de gea

rafael - smalling - rojo - shaw

valencia - carrick - blind

herrera

rooney - di maria

if rafael isn't fit, blackett into a back three. don't like shaw as a wing-back, though.
